If you see that your plant is declining production and getting lanky in shape, consider giving it a haircut. While this does not always work, it works more times than not. This eggplant was covered with mites when I returned from vacation. I severely cut it back, sprayed horticultural oil as per the instructions, cleared off the top layer of soil and replaced with virgin potting soil, fertilized with 10-10-10, watered deeply and it is back better than ever.
Here is a list of vegetables that I have cut back and to my surprise they grew back bushier and produced at least one more crop for me.
- tomatoes
- broccoli
- eggplant
- peppers
- Seminole pumpkin
- pole beans including lima
- celery
- okra
- pigeon pea
Cabbages will regrow if you carefully cut the main head off. See https://growagardener.blogspot.com/search?q=cabbage and scroll down a few posts for information on cutting off cabbages.
Experiment with plants you were planning on removing and you will never be disappointed. They either survive or they don't.
