How to Steam Veggies

First Steamed Green Beans from the Garden


These baby green beans were harvested, steamed and eaten a week ago.

Don't know how to steam vegetables? This is how Karen does it:
  1. Insert steamer basket into pot and add water so the surface of the water is under the basket.
  2. Add cleaned vegetables to steamer basket.
  3. Put lid on pot.
  4. Heat on high until steam is coming out of the pot.
  5. Reduce heat so that steam is only slightly coming from pot.
  6. If you steam on HIGH, and don't reduce the heat, you will evaporate all the water and burn the pot. Been there, done that!
  7. Check vegetables for tenderness with a fork.
  8. Do not overcook or they will lose color and texture.
  9. Using lid to prevent the veggies from falling out, tip pan over sink to discard water. We keep this liquid for soups and to water our plants with.
  10. Dump pot with steamer basket and veggies into a large bowl.
  11. Do I need to say remove pot and steamer basket? I use a towel over my hands when doing this.
  12. Serve HOT and enjoy.
