Hurricane Irma and the Gardens

Scratch that off the bucket list... being in the eye of a hurricane.

We were without power here until Sunday 17 afternoon.

Most of our fruit trees were flattened in a North/South direction which is strange because the wind was more East/West. Papayas fared the worst. Bananas second worst. Every trimmed back, potted plant remained in place! We had water standing on our property in the first time in eight years.

I have been spending 2-4 hours a morning cleaning up in the fruit garden and am not finished. Trees were staked onto 10' rebar supports driven four feet in the ground. Limbs were trimmed/repaired. Debris is still being collected and either composted or put at the curb. Pine needles are being used as mulch. Work to the flower/color garden has not been started other than cutting down the cannas. Today I am taking a day off and just working inside even though there is still much to be done outside. The AC is just too nice.

We have free green papaya at the curb for anyone wanting it.

Classes in my garden will be postponed until we complete the cleanup. I am not sure about the upcoming class at Veterans Park Rec Center on Citrus yet and will keep you posted. They received a lot of damage.

If anyone needs a hot shower or an AC break, please contact me. karenlharty@gmail.com

We also have a rental 55+ Lehigh condo with one car space that has AC and water. Lehigh Microtel was full with a three page wait list when we called so I know there are people out there that need shelter.

I am going to be making another post, mainly a reminder for myself, with an updated hurricane list and notes. It's not garden related so read if you like, or trash it.
