Tis the season! Clear out the dead leaves and trim back the "ugly" leaves. Use leaves for tea or compost. Pull out a few bulbs for cooking and tea too.
I use scissors on this plant. Every other tool has be useless to remove the leaves. Take your time and cut by small handfuls. WEAR GLOVES. The leaves can cut you like a paper cut. Now is a good time to pull some bulbs to give to friends to start their own. Use a shovel if pulling is too difficult.
