Based on ease of care and bountiful harvests here are this year's nominees:
- Broccoli and Cabbage. Both have HEAVY multiple harvests. Grown Fall, Winter, Early Spring
- Moringa. (TREE) Can be grown in a pot or cut back to maintain at a reasonable height for harvesting. Most nutritious plant that we know of.
- Sweet Potato. Loves SW FL summer heat and humidity. Does okay in cooler weather. HUGE harvests.
- Papaya. Fruit fly can be a big problem during certain times of the year. HUGE harvests. Grow as an annual or semi annual.
- Pineapple. Takes 1-2 years for fruit but worth the wait!
- Prickly Pear Cactus. Carefree. Eat the paddles and the fruit. Watch spines. No brainer plant.
- Wild/Currant Tomatoes. They may not be pretty all the time but the fruit tastes like REAL tomatoes. Eventually succumb to root knot nematodes.
- Tropical Leaves. Okinawa, Brazilian, Longevity, and Ceylon Spinaches. Katuk, cranberry hibiscus, tropical lettuce, purslane, and even dollar weed.
- Passion Fruit. If you have the room, this plant is loved by butterflies, provides privacy, as well as lots of fruit in season.
- Barbados Cherry. One of two cherries that produces in SW Florida. One fruit has your daily requirement for vitamin C. Protect in frost areas.
