Frost Protection

Winter

Frost Protection

POTS
Move plants in pots to a protected area, preferably up against the south side of your house. Our covered lanai is on the north side of our house and we use this to store our potted plants with our fan running to keep the air circulating. Not perfect, but better than leaving them with no protection. If freezing is expected, we haul potted plants into our garage.

OUTDOOR PLANTS
Outdoor plant protection: WATER. We run our drip all night long. It is amazing how warm our well water is. If you don't have drip, water your plants THOROUGHLY the day before the expected frost/freeze. Do not water foliage, just the soil.

Do not cover plants with plastic. This can cause more harm than good. Fabric covers work well as long as the fabric touches the ground making a "tent" over the plant. The fabric allows the earth's heat to be trapped in the "tent".
