Root Knot Nematodes

Can you eat roots that have been damaged by Root Knot Nematodes?
Meloidogyne incognita (the southern root-knot nematode) YES, you can. However the flavor might be bitter. We have yet to find this to be the case with our carrots. We scrub them up and eat them all the time. Above is one carrot that the root knot nematodes attacked with vengeance in our bed. NOTE: we harvested surrounding carrots with minimal damage. Below is how it cleaned up with just a light scrubbing.

After one more scrub, no one will even know it had galls.

Remember not to compost the scrubs! Put them in the TRASH.

Avocados

Avocados: Save the Guac

Deadly fungus spread by redbay ambrosia beetles causes a vascular disease in trees called laurel wilt. Only use local firewood.

Cabbages

Cabbages: protecting from caterpillars

Love this idea of citrus bags preventing moths laying caterpillar eggs on cabbages.

VegHeads 4-H Youth

VegHeads 4-H club receives HUGE donation of seeds from Rural King

The VegHeads have received an unbelievable donation of seeds from Rural King located in Bonita for their seed library. The donation fills up half of a storage room where the library is located at Veterans Park Rec Center. The seeds, mostly Fall, Winter, and Spring vegetables will be available in a couple of months when it is appropriate to plant.

We so need a larger seed storage refrigerator now!

Check out their website where you are able to download their FREE seed order form.
