RECAP: Linda Sapp of Tomato Growers August 2013 Meeting

FRUIT SET: tomatoes want night temperatures of 55-65 degrees to set fruit. Certain hybrids can set fruit up to 79 degrees.

START SEED INDOORS: when it is HOT outside. Then take outside to grow.

PROTECT: seedlings from downpours.

TRANSPLANT: when plants are 4-6" tall.

IN GENERAL
    •    Summer: cherry, current, or grape tomatoes which are closest to "wild" tomatoes.
    •    Fall: most but the beefsteak
    •    Spring: most varieties

MULCH: keeps soil from splashing up on leaves and infecting plants. Keep mulch away from base of plant.

TOMATOES:
    •    can be grown in a 5-, 10-, or 15- gallon container.
    •    need calcium
    •    need at least 6 hours of direct sun.
    •    need support. Don't grow on the ground.
