Grow your own food class at Heartland Gardens Part 11

Week 11 class was about container gardening and gardening with herbs. Container gardening is a great way to garden in small areas. Farfard is a type of soil that was recommended for growing in pots. You could use ½ garden soil and ½ coffee grounds or 1/3 compost, 1/3 garden soil and 1/3 coffee grounds. It was also recommended that you could bake small amounts of used soil in your oven at 450 degrees.

Watering should be from the bottom with spray nozzle, the late afternoon is the best time to water potted plants.

To maintain plants they should be dead headed, soil should be clean of debris. The dead leaves will rob plant of nutrients so don’t compost on the plant.

All flowers from herbs are edible. The plant should be pruned from the top, harvest to keep growing. Don’t let the plant set seeds.
