Grow your own food class at Heartland Gardens Part 7

Ian Orlikoff was the guest speaker this week. He is from Eco Logic Land Care. He spoke about making compost tea. He said compost teas are a natural way to build up your garden. It makes the garden soil more efficient, by adding good bacteria and fungi. Ian stated that the compost tea will be different every time you make it depending on the compost used. You will see the results within 24 hours of putting on plants. Spray the plants with the large holes of the sprayer and cover as much of leaf as possible.

This is a list of what is needed to make your own compost tea maker. Heartland Gardens is selling these items.
  • 5 Gallon pail with lid
  • 1 fish pump
  • .5 lb Compost
  • 1 oz SoluPLKS Humic Acid
  • .5 oz Fish Hydrolysate
  • .5 oz Soluble Kelp
  • 4-5 gallons Water
Brew for 24 hours and apply within 72; tea must be aerated up until it is applied. For extra fungal biomass, pretreat compost with .5 oz SoluPLKS, .25 oz Fish Hydrolysate 48 hours before brewing.

So much information given that it is best to go on these web sites:

One last interesting thing about compost tea is that it will eliminate thatch in your grass.
