Grow your own food class at Heartland Gardens Part 4

The topic this week was watering technique, drip irrigation and moisture assessment. Benny Pino stated he believes that watering is an art form. You must be careful not to over water or under water. The plants need a different amount of water at different stages of life cycle. Small seeds will disperse easily if over watered. Small seedlings should be watered 2 x a day. Small transplants need to be watered often. Adult plants are best if you use a drip irrigation system. The drip irrigation system use less water and prevents drying out and wilting. Over watering can cause yellowing of the leaves.
Drip Works, is the source they suggested.  This is the web site http://www.dripworksusa.com/store/kitshop.php. you can order from.

Heartland recommended water the base of the plant so water doesn't splash back. The some suggestion as Roy Beckford gave us at the Lehigh Acres Edible Garden meeting last Wednesday.

I also found out that drip and hand watering are exempt from water restrictions.

The Blue Plant It zucchini and chard are growing well. The cabbage seed we planted did not sprout well so we planted mustard seeds to replace them. The other 3 "families" plants were doing well.

Also suggested was to plant Milkweed to attract the bad bugs. Plant away from your garden.
