You may not be able to call crops or herbs grown hydroponically (or in pots) organic if this is approved.
This was sent to me by Gene McAvoy:
There may be changes coming to the USDA National Organic Protocol (NOP) defining what is allowed in terms of calling hydroponically produced produce organic.
Attached is a recommendation by a USDA committee to define/restrict container and hydroponic growing of organic products which makes a recommendation to the NOP NOT to allow hydroponic production and limit container production of organic produce.
In the summary, they exempt transplants and herbs but when you read the whole report they are talking about herbs grown and sold in pots. You may not be able to call crops or herbs grown hydroponically organic if this is approved.
