Ms. Patty Boyd was our guest speaker at our last meeting on November 17, 2011. She covered so many things that it will be impossible to recap it all but here are the highlights:
Gardening in Lehigh Acres is based on luck. Things that work one time won't work the next. Fighting the critters foraging in the garden is yet a whole other challenge. Accept that failure is part of gardening here and, as Patty put it, use a gun on the critters. :)
Use short day onions
Leave suckers on tomatoes
Baking soda and sugar for ants
Grow guardian marigolds for nematodes
White sweet potato grows well here too
Neem tree leaves are great to work into soil for nematodes
Cut sweet potato tops off then wait 5-7 days to harvest potatoes
Rotating crops is a must
Save seeds from heirloom plants not hybrid plants
Flowers in the garden bring bees
Coffee grounds are great in the garden
Grow upwards instead of on the ground for best results
