DIY soil test:
Put a 1/2 cup of soil into each of two containers (#1 and #2).
Add a 1/2 cup of vinegar to cup #1.
If it bubbles/fizzes it is alkaline. Add wood ash or lime to your soil.
To cup #2 add a 1/2 cup of water, mix, then add a 1/2 cup of baking soda to cup #2.
If it bubbles/fizzes it is acidic. Add sulfur or pine needles to your soil.
