Heartland Garden Blog Week 9 and Week 10

I missed week 9 but this is the basic subject of the class. I was told that it was very wet on this Saturday.

Organic Control of Garden Insects

First consider garden health as many insects attack unhealthy plants. Ask yourself: did you prepare soil properly, proper nutrients available, use enough compost, correct pH, transplant/start seed properly, are you watering properly, are you weeding effectively, are plants receiving enough sun, are you growing plants in season, very effective: diverse cropping, proper crop rotation and best FL heirloom varieties.

Week 10

This week Benny Pino talked about vertical gardening and trellising. Trellising is great way grow and harvest plants. The width should be 12” by 4 ‘in length of soil for each set of plants. Some plants can grow 6 feet tall so it is important to have tall trellis so they do not come back down and crowd themselves out. Bamboo is about the best material to use, we were shone many different ways to build. You can add plants at the base. Some of the crops to trellis are pole beans, lima beans, cucumbers, peas and malabar spinach. Also suggest was trellising sweet potatoes up a fence to be used as privacy.

Warm weather crops can be planted after January 21st. Summer squash, zucchini and spaghetti squash are great to trellising.
