Grow your own food class at Heartland Gardens Part 5

This week's topics included biomass planting, weeds, and mulching.

Biomass plantings are to be used in compost or turn under in soil. It was suggested that the seeds be legume and grain mix. Just broadcast over garden area, harvest just when the plants flower. This is a list of crops suggested: buckwheat, cardoon legumes, comfrey, hemp and sudex. Hemp should be harvested before the grains shatter and is good to plant in summer. Sudex is considered a biofuel.

Weeds and mulching were the second topic. Get rid of all grass, be sure to get the root. As for the weeds it was said to look at your plants and get to know them. On a personal note, I wish the seed packets had a picture of the plant leaves to help identify plant from weeds. Double dig and mulching should eliminate the weeds.

If a plant flowers to early, pinch off so plant will grow taller and produce larger more abundant fruits and vegetables. This could be why my tomatoes and peppers are short with small fruits.
