This post is to recap what ECHO taught us at our first meeting on July 20th 2011.
Mr. Russ Luther enlightened the group on ECHO's mission and his intern Katie presented unusual edibles that will grow in Lehigh's hot and humid summers. It was a true learning experience.
For those that missed the first meeting or want more details, this link takes you to a page at ECHO that you can download a PDF of edibles to grow in our summers. This is not the exact version Katie presented but a lot of great stuff to read.
At the website that Katie referred us to, ECHO has an on-line book which discusses low-cost, light-weight methods for gardening in any situation where good soil is not available or is not suitable for gardens. You will be surprised at what you can grow on an old carpet or in a cement-mixing tray filled with old socks filled with cola cans! To read the book online, click on chapter titles on the left of this link.
Mr. Russ Luther mentioned "tire" gardening for container growing in poor soil conditions. The ECHO website offers an online PowerPoint presentation with the details of this and other "rooftop" growing solutions at this link.
LAEGE thanks Russ and Katie for educating us!
